OMICS Precision Health Breaks Down the Peptide Buzz

Peptides have become one of the most talked-about topics in health, wellness and longevity circles. Touted for everything from recovery and immune support to healthy ageing and performance, these short chains of amino acids are increasingly finding their way into conversations about preventative healthcare. But while excitement around peptide therapies continues to grow, experts stress that they are not a shortcut to good health.

To understand where the science stands today, we spoke with Dr Fernando Porras, Physician and certified Functional Medicine practitioner and Karine Khalifeh, Clinical Nutritionist at OMICS Precision Health. Together, they explain how peptides work, where they show genuine promise, and why nutrition and lifestyle remain fundamental to achieving meaningful results.

Restoring Communication Pathways
According to Porras, one of the reasons peptides have attracted so much attention in regenerative and longevity medicine is their ability to support the body’s natural processes rather than override them. “At a functional level, they restore the communication pathways within the body,” he said. “Many patients today have impaired cellular signalling due to chronic inflammation caused by stress, poor sleep, or aging.”

Unlike many traditional pharmaceutical interventions, peptides are drawing interest because of their broad range of potential benefits and comparatively low side effects when used appropriately.

“Most of these therapeutic peptides attract attention in longevity because they tend to have multiple beneficial effects with relatively low side effects, when compared to traditional drugs,” he said. “They support the body’s natural repair mechanisms rather than overriding them.”

In clinical practice, Porras said several peptides are currently leading the conversation and the ones most often used are: BPC-157, CJC/Ipamorelin, GHK-Cu, and Thymosin Alpha-1. Among these, some applications appear particularly promising. “BPC-157 looks very promising for healing and repair. The GH peptides look promising for body composition and recovery in middle-aged adults, and Thymosin Alpha-1 for those who need immune support.”

However, he cautioned that not every peptide generating buzz has the same level of scientific backing. “The therapeutic peptides that still need more time and research are the ones like Semax/Selank for cognitive performance. We still need more strong human long-term data, and they work best as adjuncts, not replacements.”

When it comes to long-term use, Porras believes caution and personalised care remain essential.

“Short-to-medium term safety is excellent for most peptides when used properly. Long-term human data is still limited for many, which is why I prefer to use therapeutic cycles with clear goals and periodic breaks rather than indefinite preventative use.”

While preventative applications may have a role, he said they should never be approached casually, adding that preventative use makes sense in high-performing or ageing patients, but it should be guided by labs and clinical response. More long-term registry studies are needed, which Porras hopes we’ll see in the coming years.”

For patients hoping to maximise results, lifestyle factors remain a major determinant of success. “Patients who optimise sleep, nutrition, resistance training, and stress management respond dramatically better,” said Porras. “Those who expect peptides to fix poor lifestyle habits usually see limited or temporary results.”

He added that successful treatment depends on both accurate assessment and individualisation.

“The most important step is proper diagnosis and matching the right peptide to the right patient. The best responders are motivated, consistent with their protocols, and work with a clinician who adjusts based on a follow-up visit rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.”

Why Nutrition Matters More Than Ever
For Karine Khalifeh, Clinical Nutritionist at OMICS Precision, the conversation around peptides cannot be separated from nutrition. Since peptides themselves are made up of amino acids, nutritional deficiencies can directly affect how the body produces and responds to them.

“Peptides are chains of amino acids, so deficiencies in key amino acids and nutrients can affect the body’s ability to produce and respond to them.”

One of the most common issues she encounters is inadequate protein intake. So many people are consuming less than 1.2-1.5 grams per kilogram of body weight daily, so they are deficient in the amino acids needed for peptide production. Beyond overall protein intake, Khalifeh highlighted several specific amino acid gaps that are becoming increasingly common.

“Glycine is essential for collagen synthesis and gut lining integrity. Modern diets are more focused on muscle meat, so people are getting leucine, isoleucine and valine, but glycine, proline and hydroxyproline are severely lacking because they no longer eat bone broth, organ meats, and slow-cooked collagen-rich cuts regularly.”

She also pointed to deficiencies in tryptophan and tyrosine, which can affect peptides associated with sleep and cognitive performance. “If dietary intake is inadequate, peptides targeting sleep or cognitive function cannot work optimally.”

Khalifeh noted that tryptophan is commonly found in eggs, turkey, pumpkin seeds and bananas, while tyrosine can be found in aged cheeses, beef and salmon and that micronutrients also play an important supporting role.

“You can eat adequate tryptophan but if B6 is depleted, then not enough serotonin and melatonin are produced, affecting sleep.” She highlighted sources of vitamin B6, including salmon, pistachios, sunflower seeds and bananas, while magnesium can be found in dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale, as well as pumpkin seeds. Vitamin C sources include red, yellow and green peppers, lemons and kiwis.

Gut Health, Blood Sugar and the Bigger Picture
Khalifeh explained that gut health has a significant influence on how the body responds to peptide therapies.When someone has compromised gut health, including increased intestinal permeability, dysbiosis, or chronic gut inflammation, this will directly influence peptide therapy.She added that poor gut health can impair nutrient absorption, including important cofactors such as vitamin B6, magnesium, zinc and selenium.

“Increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut) can also contribute to systemic inflammation, and you don’t want those peptides to try to deliver those signals in an inflamed environment where the body is busy trying to fight it.”

To support gut health, Khalifeh recommended anti-inflammatory foods including turmeric, ginger and omega-rich foods such as fatty fish, alongside probiotic-rich foods including kimchi, kefir, and sauerkraut.

Blood sugar control is another area where nutrition and peptide therapies intersect.

“Since we are talking about blood sugar levels here, the peptide Sermorelin, for example, cannot stimulate efficient growth hormone release when fasting insulin is constantly elevated.”

As a result, she advocates for a low-glycaemic, anti-inflammatory nutritional approach. “A low-glycemic, anti-inflammatory nutrition plan which is rich in polyphenols from berries, turmeric and olive oil, omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish like salmon, fibre from vegetables and legumes, and adequate protein to maintain muscle mass directly reduces inflammation and regulates blood sugar levels.”

Ultimately, Khalifeh views nutrition as the foundation upon which peptide therapies can build, and while they are certainly powerful tools, they work best in a body that is already moving in the right direction nutritionally. She also believes one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding peptides is the idea that they can compensate for poor lifestyle habits. “The mail myth I see, and the way this message is often delivered through social media, is that peptides work independently of lifestyle and nutrition.”

The reality, she said, is very different.

“That you can inject a peptide, continue eating poorly, sleeping inadequately, managing stress badly, and still achieve the results being promised online.”

To help patients understand the relationship between peptides and lifestyle, Khalifeh often uses a simple analogy: “Your physician is giving you a premium seed (the peptide) to plant in your body, and my role is to look after the soil in which that seed will be planted (your internal environment, including nutrition and gut health). This approach is how you achieve optimal results.”

While peptides continue to generate interest across longevity, recovery and preventative health, both experts agree that they are most effective when viewed as part of a broader strategy rather than a standalone solution. Porras emphasises the importance of personalised treatment plans, careful monitoring and realistic expectations, while Khalifeh highlights the foundational role of nutrition, gut health and metabolic balance. Together, their perspectives reinforce a common message: peptides may be powerful tools, but lasting results depend on creating the right conditions for them to work.
