Pack Smart, Sparkle More: Your Summer Jewellery Guide

We’ve got your summer jewellery essentials covered

Undoubtedly, we all want to look our best when we are on vacation. What is a better way to add that coveted summer golden glow than jewellery? Wherever you are heading this summer, an Instagram-worthy place will be waiting for you. So, let’s start packing the perfect selection for your destination.

Packing jewellery could be tricky because you must choose pieces that stand out yet are versatile.

Let’s break it down by destination.

Beach Babes: Sun, Sand and Sea-Ready Jewels: If you are heading to a blue waters and clear skies destination this summer, then you should pack jewellery that is mostly gold and diamonds. Rubies and Sapphires are safe to pack as well.

Think of styles that don’t loosen up quickly like studs, huggies, thick chains and secured cuffs. It is tempting to pack colourful gemstones like turquoise, emerald or even pearls. Unless you are going to wear them at night and far away from the beach, don’t bring them along as you will risk damaging them. Sunscreen, tanning oil, heat and sand can affect the lustre of the stones and can even damage enamel.

Your Jewellery box selection: Stud earrings, link chain necklace, huggies for the morning; dangling earrings, chain bracelets or cuff, layered necklaces and cord or leather necklace or bracelet for nights out.

Take Care: Sunscreen, tanning oil and sand. All these factors can loosen up stones, create friction and scratch the gold or damage the stones. Your best bet is plain gold and diamond jewellery.

City Slickers: Bold Baubles for Busy Days: If you are heading to a bustling city this summer, then the world is your oyster. Think pop of colours through enamel or gemstones, statement pieces and jewellery that will take you from morning to night.Have fun mixing and matching and choose pieces that complement each other and that are versatile.

Your Jewellery Box Selection: Oversized hoops, Statement earrings, colourful huggies, pearl or bead necklace, a thick chain with a statement pendant, tennis bracelet, a signet ring and a hero cuff.

Take Care: Packing your jewellery right is very important. Pack every piece separately or place them in a travel jewellery pouch/box. Avoid friction between pieces. Small plastic bags are easy to use and will enable you to pack more pieces in your pouch without risking pieces scratching or damaging each other.

Safety first:
A recent study showed that 20 per cent of people have experienced loss or theft of fine jewellery when travelling. Twenty-seven per cent of those travellers report losing their jewellery on the beach. I speak from experience when I say that it is heartbreaking to lose a piece that means a lot to you. Here’s how to prevent theft or loss:

  1. Take a picture of your selection before travelling and check it every day when you are taking off your jewellery.
  2. Never take off a piece while you are in a crowded area.
  3. Create a routine of putting on and taking off your jewellery in the hotel/residence. This will minimise the risk of misplacing a piece.
  4. Don’t wear loose rings so it doesn’t slip off while you are busy.
  5. Make sure all your clasps and locks are secure.
  6. Make a habit of checking your jewellery every time you leave a location.
  7. Avoid packing fragile or delicate pieces.

Happy vacation!
