How to gift the perfect piece of jewellery

Welcome to Nouran’s Jewellery Box, where you will receive monthly advice about all things jewellery

My name is Nouran El-Marmari, and I am the founder and designer of Marmari Jewellery. I am a certified Pearl Appraiser and Accredited Jewellery Professional. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Design from the American University of Sharjah. I worked for twelve years in the media world as a Promotion Director before following my true calling and switching careers. I am thrilled to be sharing with you insider tips, hacks and so much more in the coming months through Nouran’s Jewellery Box column.

Jewellery is my language of choice, and I am here to help you decode it one column at a time.

As we enter February, our focus turns to the love that is in the air. Additionally, many events fast approaching such as Ramadan, Eid and Mother’s Day, require us to find the perfect present for our loved ones. Whether you are looking for a present for your significant other, your mother or something that symbolizes the spirit of Ramadan or Eid, jewellery is the answer.

Jewellery is one of the most amazing gifts you could ever give. Chosen wisely, it is a gift that will stand the test of time and will always remind the wearer of the special occasion they received it on and the person they received it from.

How do you choose the perfect piece? My dear reader, I present you with a list of Dos and Don’ts that will help you navigate the world of jewellery while hunting for the perfect gift! I am confident you will find.

Dos:

  • When gifting jewellery, remember your relationship with the person you are gifting.
  • Consider their style and preferences.
  • Shop from reputable and trustworthy brands. Quality matters and reputable brands often offer craftsmanship and authenticity.
  • Presentation matters. Don’t underestimate the power of presentation. A nicely wrapped gift adds to the experience.
  • Add a personal touch. You can make the jewellery more unique and meaningful by personalizing it. Consider options like engraving, monogramming, or customising it with their birthstone.
  • When in doubt, go for the classics. You can never go wrong with a hoop earring or a dainty necklace. They are timeless.

Don’ts:

  • Avoid jewellery that is deeply personal or that has religious or political motifs if you don’t know the person well enough.
  • Steer away from necklaces and bracelets with very thin chains, as they are delicate and prone to damage.
  • Refrain from gifting rings or bracelets unless you know the correct size.
  • Don’t compromise on quality.

The ultimate checklist:

  • Quality: Ensure the jewellery is well-crafted and made to last.
  • Practicality: Consider whether the piece suits the recipient’s lifestyle.
  • Personality: Choose something that resonates with their style.

This brings me to the best kind of gifting: self-gifting! Jewellery is a beautiful way to remember happy occasions, celebrate milestones, and mark new beginnings and self-growth. Nothing says “I love you” more than a beautifully crafted piece of jewellery.

My number one piece of advice would be to only buy what speaks to you or what you would wear on repeat. More on that next month.

You are now ready to hunt for the perfect jewellery present.

Happy shopping
